Welcome to Day #2 of 30 Day Publishing Blueprint. So you already have your work organized. You know what is going to happen and you have the map to get you there. So that brings us to today. Today you are going to write 5,000 words. That is your goal, you can write more if you like or of course you can go at your own pace. This isn’t meant to make you feel overwhelmed it is meant to keep you going and on task.
Now on to those 5,000 words. If this is your first time to writing a book I am not going to sugar coat it for you, this is absolutely almost the hardest part. The hardest part is honestly pushing that publish button, but we have some time until we get there. Now if you have already written a book or several stories, you KNOW starting the story is the hardest part.
So I am going to go over a few ways to help you get started:
- Onomatopoeia – Start with a Boom! Crash! Bang! Use a sound effect to get a readers attention with some action.
- Setting Snapshot – Describe the immediate setting of the story. Is your character in a scary house? A cemetery? The horrible school cafeteria? Get the reader hooked with place descriptions.
- Character Snapshot – Describe your main character or even the object of your character’s affection. Those are ways to gain your reader’s interest with compelling characters. Like yes, I would love to read more about that hot guy over there or the interesting girl that stairs at her book.
- Foreshadowing – Let the reader in on whatever is lurking in the dark. The character may be oblivious that something is about to happen, but the reader knows and they are now curious. Because really what is going to happen to Susan in the big haunted house.
- Feeling – Give your characters feelings from the start, make the reader have to know what is going to happen to them and why they are feeling the way they are.
- Dialogue – A few of these stated above can be used with dialogue, but hey why not just start right in the middle of a conversation? It get’s the reader right into the action and the story starts going.
I would love to know two things how did you decide to organize your story and how did you decide to start writing it? Please let me know and don’t forget to sign up for the daily email.
